Delicious French Fries Bread – aka "Navajo Tacos" or "Indian Bread" – one of the best recipes you can try! Fried dough cushions until crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside. Make it sweet or salty!
What is the Indian Fried Bread / Navajo Fry Bread?
Have you ever eaten Indian bread? It's also known as "Taco Navajo", but we usually call it simply "Bread with French Fries". We also called them "Pop Overs" – many names for a lot of goodness!
If you did not have them before, I strongly recommend you try them. They are amazing !! The recipe I share today is the one we have always used. My mother has been making them since I was very young and I'm pretty sure it was a recipe that Luna had taught her decades ago.
All my family members eat them a little differently. We usually serve them burgers and beans and we let everyone add their own toppings, such as tomatoes, lettuce, sour cream, cheese and olives.
Other members of my family pour honey on it and some also like to add powdered sugar and eat it as is.
Are elephant ears the same as fried bread? Although similar, there is a difference. The breads are thick, about 6 to 8 inches in diameter and are filled with everything from powdered sugar to beef tacos. While elephant ears are fine, sparkling, about 10 to 16 inches in diameter and are traditionally filled with only cinnamon and sugar.
How to make fried bread:
This Indian fried bread recipe only requires FOUR ingredients! And it is likely that you already have all that on hand.
All you have to do is combine the dry ingredients and add hot water.
Mix with your hands until it forms a paste. Let the dough rest for 5 minutes. Break the dough into balls the size of a golf ball (or even a little bigger if you like the biggest bread to fry).
Roll the dough balls into circles ½ inch thick about 6 inches in diameter and make them return to a saucepan. Make sure the oil measures 1 to 2 inches tall in the container.
Fry until the dough is golden and swells, then fry on the other side, leaving in the oil. Place on a paper towel to drain the oil.
If you want to eat it like a Navajo taco and stack meat, beans and other toppings, check out the recipe card below to know how to prepare these fillings!
And if you want to keep it simple, you can enjoy it like many of my family members and add powdered sugar.
Navajo strawberry bread TIPS:
To keep your bread flat, instead of bending to form a bowl, tear a small slit in the center of each piece just before frying.
Make sure your oil stays at a constant temperature. If the temperature is too low, the bread will be hard. If it is too hot, the outside will burn before the interior is fully cooked.
Keep the bread fried in an oven set at 200 ° F
How to keep the leftover frying bread?
Here are our best tips for storing fry brad:
Worktop at room temperature: wrap bread in plastic wrap or unsealed ziplock bag. Store for 1-2 days.
Freezer: Once the bread has cooled, pat each piece with a paper towel to remove excess oil or water. Wrap each piece of plastic and store it in an airtight container in the freezer. Freeze for 3-4 months.
To warm fried bread: Heat the oven to 350 ° F. Wrap each piece of fried bread in foil and bake for about 15 minutes. If you are in a hurry, you can throw it in the microwave.
Can I make fried bread in advance?
Bread is among the best prepared foods. We therefore recommend that you do not prepare them in advance. However, you can mix the dough and keep it in the fridge or freezer until frying.
Dough in the refrigerator: Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or transfer the dough into a ziplock bag. Store for 1-2 days. Some bakers even recommend cooling the dough a few hours before frying.
Dough in the freezer : The batter is freezing well. Once your dough has been mixed, divide it into 3-inch balls and freeze quickly. To freeze, cover a baking sheet with parchment paper or waxed paper. Place the dough balls ½ inch. Freeze for 3-5 hours. Once they have started to freeze, place each bale in a separate plastic bag and place in a freezer-proof container. Label and store up to 1 month. When ready to fry, remove the desired number of balls. Leave each ball in the bag and thaw in the refrigerator overnight. About 30 minutes before cooking, remove the dough from the bag and let the dough come to room temperature. Fry according to the recipe instructions.
Personally, I like to add all the essential ingredients like hamburger and beans, and stack this baby up high with all the fixings.
Add some salsa and it's like paradise on a plate! Add tomatoes and avocados and you'll be in paradise!
I'd like to know how to describe their taste, but it's like a taco bread salad. It does not even do justice – trust me! Know that you will love!

drenched during the night
Combine dry ingredients and add warm water. Mix with your hands until the dough forms. Let stand for 5 minutes.
Break the dough into balls the size of a golf ball (or even bigger ones).
Roll the dough into circles ½ inch thick of about 6 inches in diameter.
Fry each piece in a medium-sized saucepan with hot oil (about 1 to 2 inches deep). Fry until the dough is golden and grows, then fry it on the other side, keeping it in the oil. Place on a paper towel to drain the oil.
Put the soaked beans in a casserole, cover them with water. Cook over low heat until tender (4-6 hours). 2 hours before the end of cooking beans, stir in 2-3 chopped bacon slices. * You know that beans are cooked when they start to separate. You can also use the beans from the box for a simpler version.
In the meantime. Cook 1 lb. of burger. Once the beans are cooked, add the burger.
Spread beans on your bread and add the desired toppings.
